Security Research & Operations

Richard Aceves does not claim to know everything about networking security, but his experience at Cisco since 1997 has been instructive:

- Unless you live and breathe it, information security is something most people do not think about until after the proverbial horse has left the barn.

- Hunter S. Thompson was right: "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." There is much weirdness in security, regardless of the color of your hat.

- Results obtained through well-thought collaboration will always be better than those driven by fear.

Richard has led numerous security functions at Cisco, including the Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT). A strong proponent of ongoing education, he assists Cisco customers from consumers to C-level executives in understanding the constantly changing landscape of security. In addition to PSIRT, Richard had a customer-facing role in Paris for several years and presently leads the team responsible for the Cisco Security Intelligence Operations (SIO) Portal.

Prior to joining Cisco, Richard spent over a decade at Apple based in the US and France. When not focused on security, he enjoys running, cycling, wine, baseball, motorcycles, loud guitars, and a mischievous Chocolate Lab who has his own Twitter account.

Security and its integration with social media continues to be a topic of conversation amongst my colleagues in Security Intelligence Operations. We observe how “being connected” has become an integral part of many lives around the world: each voice has an opportunity to be heard, provided those voices are given unfettered access to the Internet.
